It takes a lot of people to make our Society function. The congregation’s assistance is always needed and members and friends are invited to volunteer at any time for committees and groups by speaking with the committee chairperson or group leader.  Members interested in serving as elected officers or as appointees (positions indicated with an asterisk*) should speak to the President, the Minister, or a member of the Nominating Committee.

THE POLICY BOARD directs UUS:E’s business, financial, and administrative affairs, including formulating policy and overseeing church staff; it has charge of the Society’s property.

Acts as Society’s secular leader and spokesperson; presides at meetings of Society and Policy Board.

Chairs the Program Council and acts for President in his/her absence.

Treasurer

Has responsibility for receipt and safekeeping of money and other property; disburses money under direction of Policy Board; keeps financial accounts. Appoints Assistant Treasurer, who keeps pledge records.

Finance Committee

Advises Policy Board on financial operations; supervises canvass and fundraisers, prepares and presents annual budget.  Subcommittees are responsible for investments, the endowment fund, and stewardship.

Advises and educates the Policy Board and Program Council about making programs accessible, and about the needs of members, friends, and visitors with disabilities.

Communications Committee

Provides publicity and communications within UUS:E  and the outside community; Publishes monthly newsletter and calendar; Develops and maintains the web page.  Records services and programs for broadcast on local cable television stations; Creates exhibits, oversees the Sunday Bulletin, maintains bulletin boards, and provides brochures; Serves as the communication organ for the Society.

Congregational Events

Acts as a resource to groups and individuals planning special activities.  Assesses the needs for social events, annually reviews the events calendar to insure a variety of programs, and encourages participation in social programs and activities.

Fundraising Committee

Coordinates and supports all fundraising events held by UUS:E, striving to balance timing and variety and to avoid conflicts.  Maintains documentation on all UUS:E fundraisers.  Members of UUS:E should obtain approval from the Fundraising Committee prior to engaging in any fundraising activity or solicitations of funds for the benefit of or in the name of UUS:E.

Sustainable Living Committee

Informs congregation of and brings change to use of energy, materials, and consumer goods.  Encourages spiritual enrichment by living more simply, and in a way that is environmentally respectful, economically sound, and socially just.  In 2006 achieved UUA’s Green Sanctuary designation.

Building Project Finance Committee

Secures funds and oversees the spending of the building expansion project through each phase.  Plans and manages the project’s cash flow.

Meets monthly, usually in members’ homes third Saturday of month, to support UUS:E couples; focuses on topics of interest to those in relationships and includes discussions and socializing.

(CUREJ) Congregations United for Racial Equality and Justice works with three area UU churches, Bethel AME of Bloomfield, and New Horizon of Manchester to achieve anti-oppression goals.
