Did you know that wearing/using perfume, aftershave, or scented personal care products (e.g., deodorant, shampoo, hair spray) during Sunday Services or other UUS:E events can cause extreme difficulty for some of our members and friends?
Some of our members have severe allergies, asthma, and/or other medical conditions that cause them to be extremely sensitive to strong scents. They might immediately get a migraine headache, have a severe allergic reaction, or have difficulty breathing. Frequently the effects of exposure to such scents will last for at least a day or more resulting in fatigue, nausea, motion sickness, impaired sensory abilities, etc. Even after a person has left the room, these scents can linger and cause problems for anyone who enters the room at a later time. For the benefit of their members and visitors, many organizations are moving toward a “No Scent” policy for all meetings and events. This would also include using unscented candles, not burning incense, and using scent-free cleaning products where possible.
While the Accessibility Committee is working on this issue, we strongly urge you not to wear/use scented products when attending Sunday Services or other UUS:E events/meetings. This will allow all of our members, friends and guests to fully participate in ALL activities. More information will be forthcoming, but if you have any questions or concerns in the meantime, please contact Deborah Walker, Accessibility Committee Chairperson at 424-2580. Thank you!
